Supplements

It's important to be cautious when it comes to supplements, as not all supplements are effective or safe. Honestly, some are just a waste of money.  Some supplements may not contain the ingredients they claim to, or may not be formulated in a way that allows the body to effectively absorb and use the ingredients. In addition, some supplements can interact with medications or have side effects, so it's important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.

Here are some tips to help you avoid wasting money on ineffective or potentially harmful supplements:

  1. Do your research: Look for information from reliable sources, such as scientific studies or government websites, to learn about the potential benefits and risks of a supplement.

  2. Check for third-party testing: Look for a supplement that has been tested by an independent third party, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), to ensure that it meets quality standards and contains the ingredients listed on the label.

  3. Look for quality ingredients: Choose supplements that contain high-quality ingredients and are formulated in a way that allows the body to effectively absorb and use them.

  4. Talk to a healthcare provider: If you are considering taking a supplement, it's always a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you.

In addition to a complete multivitamin, we take these three supplements that have convincing scientific evidence of actually doing something.

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a molecule that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism and DNA repair. It has been shown to have anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects and may improve cognitive function.  NMN is an alternative but seems to be falling out of favor.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects. It may also help to improve skin health and reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are similar to the beneficial bacteria found in the human gut. They have been shown to have a variety of health benefits, including improving digestion and gut health, boosting the immune system, and reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases.  Eating lots of yogurt, kombucha, cottage cheese, pickled vegetables, and miso soup is a great way to boost your gut health as they are all high in probiotics.
